University of Leuven - Leuven University
A private, coeducational Catholic university in Leuven, Belgium. It is called Louvain in French and Leuven in Dutch. Since its founding in 1425, it has always been known as a center of Catholic education and research. It previously taught in both Dutch and French, but in 1970 it separated into a Dutch-English university and a French university. (1) Katholieke Universiteit Leuven A Dutch-English university with faculties of theology, canon law, law, economics and applied economics, social sciences, philosophy, psychology and education, science, applied chemistry, and agriculture, as well as facilities such as the Institute for Advanced Philosophy Research. It has about 1,700 faculty members and 27,000 students (1997). (2) Université Catholique de Louvain: A French-speaking university with faculties of Theology, Law, Economics, Politics, and Social Sciences, Medicine, Psychology, Education, Science, Applied Chemistry, and Agriculture, as well as many other facilities, including the Institute for Advanced Studies in Religious Sciences. It has approximately 1,200 faculty members and 20,900 students (1997).
