Mother of Oedipus, a hero in Greek mythology. Daughter of Menoeceus, she became the wife of King Laius of Thebes and gave birth to Oedipus. However, fearing an oracle that warned her son would kill her, Laius had the baby pierced with a pin immediately after birth and abandoned in the mountains of Cithaeron. However, Oedipus was picked up and raised as the adopted son of the King of Corinth, and when he came of age, he killed Laius, unaware that he was his father, just as the prophecy had predicted. He then came to Thebes, solved the riddle of the Sphinx, and married Jocasta. After giving birth to four children with Oedipus, when the fact that they were married was revealed, Jocasta is said to have committed suicide by hanging herself.

ギリシア神話の英雄オイディプスの母。メノイケウスの娘で，テーベ王ライオスの妃となりオイディプスを生んだが，息子に殺されるという神託を恐れたライオスは，この子を生後すぐにかかとをピンで貫き，キタイロンの山中に捨てさせた。しかしオイディプスは拾われてコリント王の養子として育てられ，成人すると予言どおり自分の父とは知らずにライオスを殺し，そのあとテーベに来てスフィンクスの謎を解き，イオカステと結婚した。オイディプスとの間に4人の子を生んだあとで，母子婚の事実が明らかになると，イオカステは首を吊って自殺したという。
