The Roman family, familia, consisted of the head of the family, pater familias, his wife, his sons and daughters, his unmarried daughters and sons, and his slaves. The head of the family had the right of ownership over the slaves, and the patriarchal power, patria potestas, over the rest of the family. As seen in the Twelve Tables, the head of the family had the right to force his children into marriage, to give them up for adoption, or to sell them, and even the right to have life and death over them.
