AFL is a national labor union federation formed in 1886 and consisting of only skilled workers. The AFL was founded in 1935 by industrial unionists who were dissatisfied with the AFL's policies and formed the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), but in 1955 the two groups merged to become the AFL-CIO.
