American Federation of Labor

AFL is a national labor union federation formed in 1886 and consisting of only skilled workers.
The AFL was founded in 1935 by industrial unionists who were dissatisfied with the AFL's policies and formed the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), but in 1955 the two groups merged to become the AFL-CIO.

ゴンパーズに指導されて発展。職能別組合主義をとり，また直接的な政治運動をさけ，資本主義制度下での労働者の地位向上をめざす穏和な組織。1935年，AFLの方針を不満とした産業別組合主義者が産業別組織会議（CIO）を結成して分裂したが，55年両者は合同し，AFL−CIOとなった。
