A primitive rabbit-sized kangaroo that resembles a mouse in appearance (illustration). A general term for mammals belonging to the subfamily Macropodinae and Macropodinae of the marsupial order Macropodidae. They live in the deserts, grasslands, and forests of Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea, and there are eight species in five genera. For a kangaroo, their forelimbs are relatively large, and their long tails are usually hairy . Some species, such as the long-nosed potoroo, can wrap their tails around objects, catching grass and other nesting material and carrying it. 外観がネズミに似た,ウサギ大の原始的なカンガルー類(イラスト)。有袋目カンガルー科ネズミカンガルー亜科とニオイネズミカンガルー亜科に属する哺乳類の総称。オーストラリア,タスマニア,ニューギニアの砂漠,草原,森林にすみ,5属8種がある。カンガルー類としては,前肢が比較的大きく,長い尾はふつう有毛。ハナナガネズミカンガルーPotorous tridactylus(英名long‐nosed potoroo)など一部の種では尾をものに巻きつけることができ,巣材の草などを巻きとって運ぶ。
