Oyogi lugworm - Swimming

A general term for marine animals of the family Tomopteridae, order Polychaeta, class Annelida, and the name of one species within the family. Most species of polychaeta spend part of their larval stage in the sea as planktonic creatures and then transition to a benthic lifestyle, but the species of this family live a planktonic life for their entire lives.

The species Tomopteris (Johnstonella) pacifica is found in Honshu, the Sea of ​​Okhotsk, and the Pacific coast of North America. It is 30-40 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, and colorless and transparent. About two-thirds of the front of the body is wide and has 20-23 pairs of pedicles, but the rear part is long and slender with 11 segments. Of the two pairs of tentacles on the head, the second one is long and reaches almost two-thirds of the body. The tip of the pedicle is divided into two branches, each of which has a thin membrane like a fin, which makes it easy to swim. A similar species , T. (Tomopteris) septentrionalis , lives in Japan and is distributed along the coasts of various places.

環形動物門多毛綱遊在目オヨギゴカイ科Tomopteridaeの海産動物の総称、およびそのなかの1種名。多毛類の大部分の種類は、幼生時代の一時期を海中で浮遊生活をし、その後に底生生活に移るが、この科の種類は一生の間浮遊生活をする。

　種名オヨギゴカイTomopteris (Johnstonella) pacificaは、本州、オホーツク海、北アメリカの太平洋岸に分布する。体長30～40ミリメートル、体幅2～3ミリメートルで、体色は無色透明。体の前部の約3分の2は幅が広くて20～23対のいぼ足があるが、それに続く後部は細長くて11個の環節がある。頭部にある2対の感触手のうち第2感触手は長く、ほぼ体の3分の2に達する。いぼ足の先端は二つの枝に分かれ、おのおのに薄い膜がひれのようについているので泳ぐのに便利である。日本には近似種のオナシオヨギゴカイT. (Tomopteris) septentrionalisが生息し各地の沿岸に分布している。
