An ancient city located at the mouth of the Mejerda River (old name: Baclades River) in North Africa, now in northern Tunisia. Founded by the colonial activities of the Phoenicians, it flourished under the Carthaginian Empire as a port city, and its earliest ruins can be traced back to the 8th century BC. During the Third Punic War (149-146 BC), it supported Rome against Carthage, and was the capital of the Roman province of North Africa until Caesar rebuilt the city. It is well known that Cato the Younger, an anti-Caesar republican believer, committed suicide here. Under the imperial city system, it became a municipium (autonomous city) under Emperor Augustus, and was promoted to a colony (colony) under the reign of Emperor Hadrian.
