These people also lived on the border of the dual aspects of human life. Others, such as skinners, shepherds, dog tanners, and livestock castrators, were also looked down upon as not being members of the community, but they, too, were in contact with a world beyond the human community because they were involved with animals. Chimney sweeps, beggars, itinerant musicians, potters, and bricklayers were also not able to become members of the community, and in particular wanderers such as itinerant performers were feared and looked down upon by the settled community members.
