A city in the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture. On April 1, 1997, it was renamed Tanabe Town, Tsuzuki County, and incorporated as a city. It is located on the west bank of the Kizu River at the southern end of the Kyoto Basin, and borders Yawata City and Joyo City to the north, and Hirakata City, Osaka Prefecture to the west. It is served by the JR Katamachi Line, the Kintetsu Kyoto Line, and the Keinawa Expressway, and since the late 1960s it has been developed into a residential area on the outskirts of a large city, with a marked shift to industrialization. Greenhouse cultivation of vegetables and flowers is thriving, and it is also famous as a producer of gyokuro tea. It is home to Shuon-an and the Tanabe campus of Doshisha University. 京都府南部の市。1997年4月1日綴喜(つづき)郡田辺町から市制,改称。京都盆地の南端,木津(きづ)川西岸に位置し,北は八幡市,城陽(じょうよう)市,西は大阪府枚方(ひらかた)市などに隣接する。JR片町線,近鉄京都線,京奈和自動車道が通じ,1960年代後半以降,大都市近郊の住宅地として開発が進み,工場地化も著しい。野菜などのハウス栽培や花卉栽培が盛んで,玉露の産地としても有名。酬恩(しゅうおん)庵,同志社大学田辺校舎がある。42.92km2。6万7910人(2010)。
