Haboku

Japanese:
Haboku
A technique of ink painting. "Breaking the ink" means "breaking the light ink with light ink," i.e., layering light ink on light ink, or "breaking the light ink with thick ink," a technique of layering ink to create a three-dimensional effect with light and dark ink. It also refers to the final stage of painting (breaking the ink), and means wrinkle techniques such as himankan and fuheki wrinkles. The use of this term in Sesshu's famous "Breaking the ink Landscape" (Tokyo National Museum) may be a misunderstanding on Sesshu's part, or it may simply mean ink painting.
