Abekawa Mochi - Abekawa Mochi

Japanese:
Abekawa Mochi - Abekawa Mochi

Kinako mochi (roasted soybean flour rice cakes) are a specialty of Shizuoka City. There are several mochi shops in Miroku, Aoi Ward, Shizuoka City, where the old Tokaido road (current Prefectural Route 208) crosses the Abe River. Among them, Sekibeya was founded during the Keicho era (1596-1615) and boasts 15 generations of business. The origin of Abekawa mochi dates back to when travelers on the Tokaido road would stop at the Abe River ferry to take a break at a tea shop while waiting for porters from Kawagoe. The roasted mochi was dipped in hot water, then soaked in brown syrup and sprinkled with soybean flour before being eaten, which gained popularity and spread throughout the country. As it is easy to make, it became popular in ordinary households, and before long, the kinako mochi itself came to be called "abekawa". Jippensha Ikku's "Tokaido Chu Hizakurige" (1809) also describes the prosperity of the area, saying, "Soon it came to be known as Maitreya. This place is famous for its famous Abekawa mochi, and the teahouses on the west side are all beautiful and lively." Today, Abekawa mochi also includes bean paste mochi and rice cakes made with soy sauce flavored with wasabi, a Shizuoka specialty, and grated radish.
