[Fossils and lineages]
The oldest arthropod fossils are known from the end of the Precambrian period (sometimes called the Eocambrian period) about 700 million years ago, but it was only in the early Cambrian period about 600 million years ago that they began to have hard tissues such as chitin and calcareous matter, and trilobites and trilobites are representative of these. In the Paleozoic era, trilobites, as well as extinct arthropods such as Eurypterida, archaic ostracodes such as Leperditiida and Palaeocopida, flourished and produced many index fossils. Eurypterida flourished from the Silurian to the Devonian periods, with some reaching over 2 meters in length, making them the largest arthropods in history.
