Licinius (English spelling) Valerius Licinianus Licinius

Licinius (English spelling) Valerius Licinianus Licinius

Roman Emperor (reigned 308-324). Born to a Dacian peasant. In the midst of the chaos following the abdication of the two legitimate emperors Diocletian and Maximian (305), Licinius was elected legitimate emperor of the West in 308, but when the conflict between Constantine and Maxentius intensified, Licinius, who was in conflict with Maximinus Daia who had allied with the latter, married Constantine's sister and strengthened his ties with him. In 312, Maxentius was defeated, and the following year Licinius and Constantine officially recognized Christianity (Edict of Milan), and further defeated Maximinus Daia to gain control of the East, dividing the imperial rule with Constantine. However, the conflict between the two parties soon intensified, and in 320 Licinius resumed persecution of Christians, but was attacked by Constantine. He suffered a decisive defeat in 324 and was interned in Thessalonica, where he was soon executed.
