Bupati

Japanese: Bupati
Bupati

...The term was used ambiguously during the time of the Dutch East India Company. For example, in Ambon, southern Sulawesi, and western Sumatra, it could refer to the head of a relatively small region or village. In Java and Madura, however, it referred only to the highest ranking member of the indigenous ruling class who, as the Mataram Islamic and other kingdoms declined, were gradually incorporated into the Company's direct territories, while in other areas they were gradually becoming independent. In Indonesian and Javanese, it was called Bupati, and its administrative district was called Kabupaten (Dutch: Regentshap). In the Kabupaten capital, the offices of the Regent and the Dutch Assistant Resident were located side by side, and the latter was supposed to assist the former, but in reality it supervised and controlled them.
