A perennial herb of the family Salicaceae. It grows in sunny mountain grasslands from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is distributed throughout East Asia. The stems are 0.5-1m tall, and the leaves are pinnately compound and opposite, with thin, pointed lobes. From summer to autumn, it produces many yellow flowers. The corolla is 5-lobed, 3-4mm across, and has 4 stamens. It is one of the seven autumn herbs. The similar species, Otokoeshi, is hairy and has wide leaf lobes. The flowers are white, and the fruit has fan-shaped wings that have changed from bracts. The name corresponds to the previous species, and it is distributed throughout Japan.
