A perennial herb of the family Salicaceae. It grows in sunny mountain grasslands from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is distributed throughout East Asia. The stems are 0.5-1m tall, and the leaves are pinnately compound and opposite, with thin, pointed lobes. From summer to autumn, it produces many yellow flowers. The corolla is 5-lobed, 3-4mm across, and has 4 stamens. It is one of the seven autumn herbs. The similar species, Otokoeshi, is hairy and has wide leaf lobes. The flowers are white, and the fruit has fan-shaped wings that have changed from bracts. The name corresponds to the previous species, and it is distributed throughout Japan. オミナエシ科の多年草。北海道〜九州の日当りのよい山の草地にはえ,東アジアに分布する。茎は高さ0.5〜1m,葉は対生し,羽状複葉で,裂片は細くとがる。夏〜秋,黄色の花を多数開く。花冠は5裂し,径3〜4mm,おしべは4個。秋の七草の一つ。これに似たオトコエシは毛が多く,葉の裂片は広い。花は白く,果実には包葉から変わったうちわ状の翼がある。名は前種に対応したもので,分布は日本全土。
