...Its name comes from the Phoenician Kart-Hadasht, meaning "new city." The Romans called its people Poeni.
[History and Society]
Founded by colonists from Tyre (traditionally in 814 BC), the city of Carthage occupied a key position on maritime traffic to the west, and with its excellent harbor and fertile hinterland, it came to dominate the trade network in the western Mediterranean, dominating the Phoenician colonies that stretched westward from the Gulf of Sidra to the Atlantic coast.
