In Japan, it is also called flannel for short. A type of woolen fabric. Also called genuine flannel, as opposed to cotton flannel, which is called flannel. Either woolen yarn is used for both the warp and weft, or worsted yarn is used for the warp and woolen yarn for the weft, and the fabric is lightly fulled and brushed after weaving. English flannel is a plain weave that is lightly brushed, while German flannel is a twill weave that is heavily brushed. It is flexible, elastic, and has excellent heat retention, and is used for suits, shirts, etc. Cotton flannel is used for underwear, nightwear, etc.

日本では略してフラノとも。毛織物の一種。綿ネルをネルというのに対し本ネルとも。経(たて)糸，緯(よこ)糸とも紡毛糸を用いるか，経に梳毛(そもう)糸，緯に紡毛糸を使用し，製織後に軽く縮充して起毛する。英ネルは平織で起毛が軽く，ドイツネルは綾織で起毛が多い。柔軟で弾力があり保温性に富み，背広服，スーツ，シャツなどにする。綿ネルは下着，寝巻などにする。
