Poligār (English spelling)

...Especially in the second half of the 16th century, as local powers in various parts of South India gained independence, semi-independent territorial systems were established in Tanjore, Ikkeri, Gingi, Madura, and other areas by the Nayakas who had been feuded in those areas. Furthermore, under the Nayakas, a local ruling class called the Palaiyakkāran (or Poligār) with tax and military powers at the village and district level also emerged. The Nayakas cannot necessarily be defined as the "lords" who supported the "feudal system."
