Generally, volcanic rocks consist of slightly larger crystals (approximately 0.5 mm or larger) that exist in a spotted pattern and a matrix surrounding the crystals. This matrix is ​​called groundmass. Groundmass is usually made up of an aggregate of tiny crystals that cannot be seen with the naked eye, or of glass, and is thought to be a product of the rapid cooling of magma when it erupts on the Earth's surface.
