1780‐1860 Founder of the modern Serbian dynasty of Obrenović. Prince of Serbia (1815-39, 58-60). Born into poor peasant roots, he became a livestock merchant and participated in the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottoman Empire. In 1815, he led the Second Uprising. A realist, Obrenović learned from the failure of the First Uprising and continued negotiations with the Ottoman government while launching a rebellion. He was also fortunate in the international situation following the end of the Napoleonic Wars, and was recognized as a duke at the end of 1815.
