〘 noun 〙 One of the examination stages of the imperial examinations. During the Song dynasty, the imperial examinations were divided into three stages: the examination stage, the provincial examination, and the palace examination, but this was the name given to the examination stage after the Yuan dynasty. It was held in each province once every three years, and those who passed were called juren. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, those who took the exam had to be students (staff members) of prefectural and county schools. ※Shisetsu-tsu (1724), 6: "Scholars are tested from various places and sent from their respective provinces to this tribute institute with a letter of authorization attached. This is called fakai, and is a local examination."
