...After serving as professor at the University of Paris, he has been professor at the Collège de France for 1970. In his first major work, The History of Madness in the Classical Era (1961), he attempted to write a "history of madness" not from the standpoint of a doctor (or a cold-hearted observer), but from the standpoint of the madman himself, and to unearth the "knowledge of madness." He succeeded in shedding light on the historical character of modern reason and its repressive nature from behind the scenes, and in elucidating one specific situation in which power operates.
