In this sport, two opposing players wear protective gear and compete against each other with wooden sticks shaped like guns called "mokuju." The only valid attack is a thrust, aiming to score a point by thrusting into the opponent's throat, left chest (upper torso or lower torso), left kote, or left shoulder. For junior high school students and above, the size of the mokuju is set to be at least 1.66 meters long and 1.1 kilograms in weight, and a rubber is attached to the tip of the gun to absorb the impact of thrusts. It was developed by incorporating Japanese spear techniques into Western-style bayonet techniques introduced from France in the early Meiji period, and was used in combat training for the former Japanese military before World War II. After the war, the All Japan Jukendo Federation was formed in 1956, and it was relaunched as a sport, and in 1980 it became an official event in the National Athletic Meet. However, due to the strong image of military training, it did not gain popularity among the general public, and in 2015 it was decided to switch to a biennial event until 2022. In 2017, it was added as an optional martial arts subject to health and physical education in the new junior high school curriculum (to be implemented in 2021), causing a stir.
