...The American Yorktown (about 20,000 tons), Wasp (about 15,000 tons), and Japanese Soryu (about 16,000 tons) and Hiryu (about 17,000 tons) were originally planned as fully operational aircraft carriers. The British built the Ark Royal (about 22,000 tons) during this period, which is said to have been a groundbreaking fleet carrier and the prototype for subsequent main aircraft carriers. Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom all unintentionally focused on developing aircraft carriers with roughly the same capabilities at the same time, but until the start of World War II, aircraft carriers were still considered vulnerable, with weak defensive firepower and the immediate loss of function if the flight deck was damaged, so they could not play a major role in the fleet.
