Due to their unique shape and strong vitality, turtles have taken on various symbolic meanings around the world. In the Indian world creation myth (Shatapata Brahmana VII:5:1:2), the creator Prajapati created a turtle whose underside became the earth, its back shell the sky, and its body the atmosphere. This is because the round, raised back shell is reminiscent of the sky, and the flat underside the earth.
