Three Thousand Winds - Michikaze

A Danrin haiku poet from the early Edo period. His real surname was Mitsui, but he called himself Oyodo. His given name was Yukan, and he had over twenty other pseudonyms, including Baisui, Donkuu, Gugendou, and Touou Koji. He was born into a merchant family in Izawa, Ise Province (Matsusaka City), but he aspired to become a haiku poet early on, and went to Matsushima in the autumn of his 31st year. He lived in Sendai for 15 years, publishing "Sendai Oyakazu" and "Matsushima Choboshu." From 1683 (Tenwa 3), he traveled around the country for seven years, and compiled "Nihon Koi Pai Bunshu." In 1695 (Genroku 8), he rebuilt a hermitage at Oiso Shigitatsusawa, the remains of Saigyo. He passed away in his hometown on January 8, 4th year of the Hoei Era. His grave is in the Izawa Public Cemetery. He is the editor and author of "Hōgo Sannin Monogatari" and "Wakan Tōchōshū".

江戸初期の談林系俳人。本姓は三井、自ら大淀(おおよど)を称す。名は友翰(ゆうかん)、別号は梅睡、呑空(どんくう)、寓言堂(ぐうげんどう)、東往居士(とうおうこじ)など二十数種。伊勢(いせ)国射和(いざわ)(松阪市)の商家に生まれたが、早く俳諧(はいかい)に志し、31歳の秋松島に赴く。仙台に15年居住し、『仙台大矢数(おおやかず)』『松島眺望集』を刊行。1683年(天和3)から7年間、全国を行脚(あんぎゃ)して『日本行脚文集』をなす。95年(元禄8)西行遺跡の大磯鴫立沢(おおいそしぎたつさわ)に庵(いおり)を再興。宝永(ほうえい)4年1月8日郷里で没す。墓所は射和共同墓地。編著『法語三人物語』『倭漢田鳥集』など。
