A Chinese poet of the early Heian period. A son of Emperor Kanmu, he was given the title of Yoshimine Ason in 802 (Enryaku 21) and became a commoner. He was skilled in the performing arts and had a good understanding of music. He served as Uta no Kami (head of gagaku), Tango, Tajima no Suke, Kurodo no Tou, and other positions, before reaching the rank of Junior Fourth Rank in 814 (Kōnin 5). In 819, together with Fujiwara no Fuyutsugu and Otsugu, he compiled the Nihon Kōki (Chronicles of Japan). In 821, he was promoted to Junior Third Rank Chunagon (Chuunagon), and in the same year, together with Fuyutsugu and others, he compiled the Dairishiki (Chronicles of the Imperial Court). In 827 (Tencho 4), he compiled the anthology of Chinese poetry and prose, "Keikokushu," with Shigeno Sadanushi and others, and the following year he was appointed Dainagon. He passed away in 827 and was awarded the rank of Shonii. Thirteen of his poems were included in imperially commissioned Chinese poetry anthologies, including "Ryounshu." His poems show the influence of early Tang poetry as well as poetry from the Six Dynasties of China, with many five-character poems and a characteristic quatrain style.
