Purgatory

In the doctrine of the Christian Church, the place and state where souls who have committed venial sins and do not go to hell but cannot go to heaven immediately are purified through suffering and await the final judgment. The Latin word purgatorium, which means "purify," is derived from purgare (meaning "to purify") and is also translated as "the world of purgatory." The German word Fegefeuer means "purifying fire."
