[Engraving]
In the early period, wooden portraits were also made, but full-scale sculpture began in the mid-19th century with the neoclassical sculpture of H. Greenough and others who had studied in Italy. Towards the end of the 19th century, academic naturalism such as that of A. Saint-Gaudens and Daniel Chester French (1850-1931) emerged, while Frederic Remington (1861-1909) and Charles Marion Russell (1864-1926) were also active, focusing on western life (Indians, cowboys). It was not until the 20th century that sculptures corresponding to European modernism appeared, after the appearance of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), Gaston Lachaise (1882-1935), and Paul Manship (1885-1966).
