Piddock (piddock shell) - Piddock (English spelling)

Japanese: ニオガイ(鳰貝) - ニオガイ(英語表記)piddock
Piddock (piddock shell) - Piddock (English spelling)
A bivalve mollusca of the family Psammidae. The shell is thin and white, measuring 7 cm long, 2.4 cm high, and 2.3 cm wide. It is long and slender from front to back, tapering gradually toward the rear. The apex of the shell is closer to the front, and extends forward like a short beak, with a wide gap between the two shells. A willow-leaf-shaped shell fragment rests on the upper edge. The growth veins on the shell surface are plate-like at the front, and intersect with the radial ribs extending from the apex to form small spines, but gradually become weaker toward the rear. On the inside, a calcareous rod-shaped protrusion protrudes from under the apex of the shell. The soft body is white.
