…American entrepreneur. Born in New York State, he learned his trade at the arms company founded by his father Eliphalet Remington (1793-1861), and later took over the business. The business flourished during the Civil War, but demand declined after the war. As a result, he repurposed the technology he had developed in the arms industry to produce sewing machines, but failed due to inadequate sales organization. However, in the 1880s, he was successful in commercializing the newly developed typewriter, making a major contribution to the mechanization of office work. …
