Needlepoint lace, invented in Venice in the mid-16th century, was called reticella, a type of embroidery with geometric patterns sewn together so that the fabric was almost invisible. It eventually developed into the full-fledged punto in aria (lace stitched in the air). This technique involves attaching a piece of parchment with a design to a piece of coarsely woven linen, roughly stitching the outline to create a frame, and following the threads to create a blanket stitch while floating it up. When the parchment is cut and removed, the lace is created with only the threads forming the pattern. The designs started out as simple geometric borders, eventually changing into wide borders of arabesques, flowers and birds, and genre motifs, and then into animal and flower and bird motifs. …
