A jellyfish belonging to the order Hydroids, class Hydrozoa, and family Polypedidae. There are both medusa and polyp types. The medusa type is bell-shaped, about 3-4 mm tall, with nine rays, and a tentacle at the end of each ray. The tentacles have three to four branches on each side and on the ventral surface, and an eye spot at the base of the tentacle. On the other hand, the polyp type is attached to seaweed such as Sargassum in shallow waters, and each polyp stands upright from its runner. Each polyp is a thin cylinder about 1 mm tall, with four headed tentacles surrounding an opening at the top. A medusa bud forms asexually almost in the center of this polyp, and eventually becomes a young jellyfish and leaves the polyp. Jellyfish do not swim very actively, and often remain motionless on seaweed. They are commonly found in shallow coastal waters around Japan.
