For example, for a farmer in the Edo period, public was the nested system of governance consisting of the shogunate, daimyo, magistrate, village, family, and family. Each member of this system was private to those above him, and public to those below him. A feudal domain was public to its citizens, but private to the shogunate, the great public, just as executions by the shogunate's courts were called public punishments and those by daimyo and hatamoto were called self-punishments. The above relationship between public and private in public can also explain why the word public came to be used to describe areas that would be considered private from a modern perspective, such as society, public appearances, and social interactions.
