Common garden snail - Onajimaimai (English spelling)

A snail of the family Helicidae in the class Gastropoda of the phylum Mollusca. Originally native to Southeast Asia, it is now widely distributed in temperate and tropical regions of the world, and was introduced to Japan along with tea and sweet potatoes, and has spread throughout the country, living in grassy areas of residential gardens and fields, as well as on the coast. It has a low cone shape with a shell height of 10 mm and a diameter of 15 mm. Its shell is thin and comes in yellowish white and reddish brown colors, with or without a thin brown band around the edge. For this reason, there are four types depending on the combination of shell color and the presence or absence of the band. Genetically, the yellowish white type is dominant over the reddish brown type, and the type with the band is dominant over the one without. The umbilicus is open, but very narrow. During the resting period, a translucent membrane is stretched over the opening of the shell. It lays eggs in warm seasons, becomes an adult in one year, and is thought to live for 3 to 4 years. It feeds on vegetables and seedlings.
