A river that flows through the northern part of Koto Ward, Tokyo. It is a canal that connects the Sumida River and the Nakagawa River as a boat route for transporting Gyotoku salt (Gyotoku is located in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture) to Edo, and was opened shortly after Tokugawa Ieyasu entered Edo. Later, as land reclamation progressed in the Fukagawa area, the riverbank was renovated, and it became the present Onagi River (4.6 km long). From the Nakagawa River, it connects to the Funabori River to the east, connecting the Edo River and the Sumida River, and was a major artery for ships traveling eastward to carry goods to Edo via the Tone River and Edo River. JR Onagawa Station, located in Kitasuna, played a part in transportation as a freight station, but was closed in 2000.
