Swallowtail - Onagaageha

Japanese: オナガアゲハ - おながあげは
Swallowtail - Onagaageha
An insect of the Lepidoptera, family Papilionidae (illustration). It is found throughout Japan, but is rare in the cold regions of Hokkaido and the southernmost part of Kyushu. Although the population is not large, it is not a particularly rare swallowtail. It is found mainly in low mountain zones, but can sometimes be seen in urban areas. It resembles the Japanese black swallowtail, but its wings are much longer and thinner, and its wingspan is about 1 cm smaller, at 9 to 11 cm. It flies slowly. It appears twice a year, in May to June and July to August, and gathers on flowers such as azaleas and clover. The summer type is slightly larger, and males may absorb water in wetlands.
