Tower
A city in the northwest of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China, on the border with the Republic of Kazakhstan. Formerly known as Tarbagatay. Tarbagatay Prefecture was established here at the end of the Qing Dynasty, and in 1913 it was renamed Tacheng (Chochek) County, but in 1983 it was abolished as a county and became a city. There is a road leading to the capital, Urumqi. The town consists of Hancheng and Mancheng, and is inhabited by many different ethnic groups. It is an important transportation and trade point with Kazakhstan. Population: 170,000 (2014).
