…Mayer was one of the contributors to the founding of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (1927), known as the Academy Awards. He was the prototype of the movie mogul, said to be one of Hollywood's dictators, an ardent supporter of the Republican Party, and legendary for having the highest annual salary in the United States ($250,000) in the 1930s and 1940s. There is a biography of him, The King of Hollywood (1960), written by Bosley Crowther, and it is said that the studio director Pat Brady in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Last Tycoon (1941), played by Robert De Niro in the 1976 film adaptation, was partly based on Mayer. …
