...In the second half of the 19th century, we saw the realistic tendencies of W. Homer and T. Eakins, and the fantastical expressions of AP Ryder. On the other hand, J. A. Whistler and M. Cassatt were deeply involved with Impressionism in Europe, and Theodore Robinson (1852-96), C. Hassam, John Henry Twachtman (1853-1902), and JS Sargent, who worked as a portrait painter in Paris and London, brought the Impressionist style back to Japan. In other words, the art of this period saw the development of a lineage that sought an original American vision and a lineage that absorbed the European Pre-Raphaelites and Impressionists, crossing each other. ...
