Gill Arch

In higher vertebrates, the gill slits do not open, and the lungs develop separately. In parallel with the opening of the gill slits, gill arches develop along each gill slit. In fish that live their entire lives in water, numerous gill lamellae are arranged in two rows on the outer and posterior sides of the gill arches, and function as respiratory organs.
