Motel - motel (English spelling)

A type of lodging facility that originated in the United States and is aimed at travelers who travel by car. Located in convenient locations for road trips, such as along highways, the facilities and services are functional and self-service-based, and while they do not offer the high quality of staff service found in hotels, they are characterized by their low prices. The word motel is a contraction of motorists' hotel, which sounds the same as hotel, so in English it is pronounced "motel" rather than "motel", just as hotel is not pronounced "hotel". The accent is on the "te".

Motels became popular in the United States after World War II with the advancement of motorization. A representative company that successfully developed a motel chain is Holiday Inn, whose first store was opened in Memphis, Tennessee in 1952 by Kemmons Wilson (1913-2003), and expanded its scale by establishing a chain through a franchise system. Best Western, which grew into a large chain to rival Holiday Inn, is a group of independent motels and low-cost hotels that use a common service mark through a membership system.

In Japan, the railway system has been well-functioning up until now, so most accommodations are located in front of train stations or in the center of cities, and the construction of motels has not progressed. However, as road construction has progressed, American-style motels have appeared in recent years.

アメリカで誕生した、自動車を利用する旅行者を対象とした宿泊施設。高速道路沿いなど自動車旅行に便利な場所にあり、施設とサービスはセルフサービスを前提として機能的であり、ホテルのような人手による質の高いサービスを受けられない反面、低料金である点に特色がある。motelという語はmotorists' hotelを縮めてhotelと同じ響きをもたせた造語なので、英語では、hotelを「ホーテル」と発音しないのと同様に、「モーテル」ではなく「モテル」と発音する。アクセントは「テ」に置く。

　モーテルは、第二次世界大戦後のアメリカで、モータリゼーションの進行に伴って急速に普及した。モーテルのチェーン展開に成功した代表的な企業は、ケモンズ・ウィルソンKemmons Wilson（1913―2003）が1952年にテネシー州のメンフィスで第1号店を開業したホリデイ・インで、フランチャイズ・システムによるチェーン化により規模を拡大した。また、ホリデイ・インに対抗する形で大規模なチェーンに成長したベスト・ウエスタンは、独立系のモーテルや低料金のホテルが、いわば会員制によって共通のサービスマークを掲げているものである。

　なお日本では、鉄道がよく機能して今日に至った関係で、宿泊施設の立地は駅前や都市の中心部が多く、モーテルの建設は進まなかった。しかし、道路の整備が進んだため、近年はアメリカ的なモーテルも登場している。
