A general term for mammals belonging to the Otariidae family of the Pinnipedia suborder of the Carnivora order. In the strict sense, sea lions are a general term for the California sea lion Z alophus californianus californianus (illustration) and the Japanese sea lion Z. c . japonicus . Since the Japanese sea lion is already extinct, the California sea lion is often simply called sea lion. There are 50,000 to 100,000 California sea lions living off the coast of the United States in the North Pacific Ocean. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
