A mountain range that lies from the western part of Tochigi Prefecture to the eastern part of Gunma Prefecture. It borders the Daiya River to the north and the Watarase River to the west, and sinks into the Kanto Plain to the east and south. The northwest side of the main ridge line that connects Mt. Yuhidake (1,526 meters), Mt. Yokone (1,373 meters), and Mt. Maruiwa (1,127 meters) has a steep slope, while the southeast side has a gentle slope. Tributaries of the Watarase River, such as the Kurokawa River, the Oashi River, the Omoi River, and the Nagano River, carve valleys, and rice, konjac potatoes, and taro are cultivated in the valley bottom plains. The mountain range is made up of Paleozoic strata of the Chichibu system and granite, and the erosion stage is in the mature stage. Dolomite and limestone are produced in Yamasuge, Aizawa, Izuru and other places, and the prefecture is the largest producer of dolomite in Japan. Cement and crushed stone are also produced, and cedar and cypress trees are planted on the mountain slopes. There are prefectural natural parks at Maenikko, Ohirasan, Karasawasan and Ashikaga, and the prefectural youth nature center is located at Ohirasan. 栃木県西部から群馬県東部にかけて横たわる山地。北はほぼ大谷川(だいやがわ)、西は渡良瀬川(わたらせがわ)に接し、東と南は関東平野に没する。夕日岳(ゆうひだけ)(1526メートル)、横根(よこね)山(1373メートル)、丸岩(まるいわ)岳(1127メートル)を連ねた主嶺(しゅれい)線の北西側は急傾斜し、南東側は傾斜が緩く、黒川、大芦(おおあし)川、思(おもい)川、永野(ながの)川などの渡良瀬川の支流が谷を刻み、谷底平野にはイネ、コンニャクイモ、サトイモなどが栽培される。山地は秩父(ちちぶ)系の古生層や花崗(かこう)岩などからなり、侵食階程は壮年期にある。山菅(やますげ)、会沢(あいさわ)、出流(いずる)などからドロマイト、石灰(せっかい)岩を産し、ドロマイトの産出はわが国最大を誇る。セメント、砕石も産し、山地斜面などにはスギ、ヒノキの植林も行われる。前日光(まえにっこう)、太平山(おおひらさん)、唐沢山(からさわさん)、足利(あしかが)の各県立自然公園があり、太平山には県立少年自然の家がある。北部の古峰神社(ふるみねじんじゃ)は、東北地方南部におもな信仰圏を有する。 [平山光衛] 出典 小学館 日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ)日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ)について 情報 | 凡例 |
