An outside domain with its headquarters in Kagoshima, Satsuma Province. Also known as the Satsuma Domain. The domain's lord was the Shimazu clan. It ruled over the two provinces of Satsuma and Osumi, and one district in Hyuga Province, and in 1609 brought the Ryukyu Islands under its domain control, giving it a fief of over 730,000 koku. The overwhelming samurai population controlled the rest of the domain through the outer castle system, and there were almost no uprisings throughout the Edo period. The country became wealthy through the monopoly on brown sugar in Amami, the promotion of various industries, and smuggling, and together with Choshu, it led the political struggles of the late Edo period. Even after the Meiji Restoration, the Satsuma faction was formed, producing politicians, bureaucrats, and military personnel. → Clan politics → Related topics Amami Oshima | Amami Islands | Okinoerabujima | Oyura Incident | Kagoshima [Prefecture] | Gate division system | Kikaijima | Former Kagoshima Spinning Mill Engineers' House | Former Shuseikan | Koshikijima Islands | Saigo Takamori | Sakurajima | Satsuma-Tosa Alliance | Satsuma Province | Shimazu Iehisa | Shimazu family documents | Shimazu National History | Sekiyoshi's Irrigation Ditch | Tanegashima | Terayama Coal Kiln Site | Tokara Islands | Tokunoshima | Outer Castle System | Nagashima (Kagoshima) | Hagi Domain | Horeki Flood Control Incident | Yakushima | Yoron Island Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
