A marine fish of the family Squamata in the order Squamata of the class Chondrichthyes. The origin of the name "kujira" (whale) is unknown, but "fuji" probably refers to the wisteria color of the body when alive. After death, the fish turns uniformly black, so in some regions it is called "karasu," "kuronbo," or "kurotsunoko." There are eight species of the genus Squamata in the waters off Japan, but the Fuji whale has the widest distribution, having been reported from all over Japan south of the Tohoku region, as well as Taiwan, New Zealand, South Africa, southwest Africa, and off the coast of Uruguay. It only grows to 50cm in length. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
