A former town in Nishiibaraki County, central Ibaraki Prefecture. The center was Shishido-cho, where the Matsudaira clan's camp was located during the Edo period, but it moved to the area around Tomobe Station, where the Joban Line runs and the Mito Line branches off. Rice fields are developed in the Hinuma River basin, and chestnuts and chrysanthemums are also grown. It has also developed as a residential area. 茨城県中央部,西茨城郡の旧町。中心は江戸時代の松平氏の陣屋が置かれた宍戸(ししど)町地区であったが,常磐線が通じ水戸線が分岐する友部駅周辺に移った。涸沼(ひぬま)川流域に水田が開け,クリ,キクも産する。住宅地としても発展。2006年3月西茨城郡岩間町と笠間市へ編入。58.71km2。3万5545人(2003)。
