Tobacco tray - Tobacco tray

Japanese: おたばこ盆 - おたばこぼん
Tobacco tray - Tobacco tray

...A hairstyle in which the hair is shaved and partly left unkempt has been popular since the early modern period, mainly for young boys, and has names such as keshibou, gonbe (Gonbei), and bon no kubo (Bon no kubo). From the late Edo period to the Meiji period, girls wore topknots when they reached teenage years, and had different styles of hair depending on their age, such as otoba bon, momoware, yuiwata, and shimada, until they got married. [Hashimoto Sumiko]
[After the Meiji Period]
The "haircut and sword removal order" of 1871 (Meiji 4) was issued for diplomatic purposes, as the traditional topknot worn by ordinary men was preventing Japan from interacting on an equal footing with foreign nations, but it was generally seen as a "symbol of modernization and enlightenment."
