Pottery made in the Nyu District area of Fukui Prefecture. Based on ancient sueki ware and influenced by Tokoname ware from Aichi Prefecture, Echizen ware was developed in the late 12th century, at the end of the Heian period. The style of Echizen ware was dominated by Tokoname ware throughout the Kamakura period, with traces of the pottery made by rolling up clay strings and letting the natural glaze flow down, as well as the three-line pattern. However, in the mid-Muromachi period of the 15th century, Echizen ware developed its own unique style with gentle shoulders and small mouths. The remains of ancient kilns are centered around Oda, Echizen Town, Nyu District, and spread across the Miyazaki area of the town, with 47 kilns confirmed. The pottery industry continued unchanged into the early modern period, and during the Momoyama period, iron glazes began to be applied. The products were distributed over a wide area, from Hokkaido to Sanin, and in the Middle Ages, it was the largest kiln on the Sea of Japan coast.
