In China, during the Han dynasty, jade clothing was worn by the deceased. It is also called a jade box. It is made by connecting business card-sized pieces of jade with gold thread and covering the whole body like armor. It is thought to have been made in the hope that the spiritual power of the jade would allow the body to last forever. It was used by emperors, empresses, and royalty, and was made of silver or bronze depending on the person's status. It was discovered in the Mancheng Han Tombs in Hebei Province and the Tushan Han Tombs in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, and has now been completely restored. The Book of the Former Han Dynasty, Biography of Huo Guang, records that in addition to the gold-threaded jade clothing, funeral equipment, coffins, burial chambers, and a carriage to carry the coffin were bestowed.
